KHULNA, June 14, 2025 (BSS) - Prices of vegetables, poultry and other essential commodities have dropped significantly in Khulna's kitchen markets following Eid-ul-Azha for increasing supply in the last two days.
Vegetable prices have seen a notable decrease of 30 to 50 percent compared to pre-Eid levels, as per market sources.
"Before Eid, the price of vegetables had soared to Tk 200-400 per kg in the city markets. Now, the prices are falling sharply," said Md Sabirul, a retail seller at the city's Sandhabazar (Evening) Kitchen Market.
During a visit last night, it was revealed that cucumber is selling at Tk 80 per kg, down from Tk 100; drumsticks are at Tk 120-130, compared to Tk 150; okra at Tk 40-50, down from Tk 70; pointed gourd at Tk 50-60, from Tk 80; bitter gourd at Tk 50-60, down from Tk 70; ridge gourd at Tk 40-50, compared to Tk 70; tomatoes at Tk 100-120, down from Tk 150 and green chillies at Tk 140-160, down from Tk 200.
Local onions are now Tk 50-60 per kg, compared to Tk 80, while green brinjals are selling at Tk 40-50, down from Tk 60.
Fruit prices have also decreased. At the Farazipara intersection, fruit seller Kazi Shamim said that Himsagar mangoes are selling at Tk 70-80 per kg, down from Tk 90-110 and litchis are priced at Tk 650-750 per 100 pieces, compared to Tk 800 earlier. Prices of imported fruits, however, remain stable.
Md Shamim, a mango wholesaler from Borobazar, attributed the price drop to increased supply in the markets.
Chicken and fish prices are also on a downward trend. Retailer Md Manik from Sandhya Bazar said that broiler chickens are selling at Tk 170-180 per kg, down from Tk 200, Sonali chickens at Tk 270-290 (previously Tk 300) and farm cocks at Tk 290-300, compared to Tk 320.
Eggs have seen a slight drop, currently selling at Tk 130-140 per dozen.
Fish prices have fallen as well. A visit to Gallamary kitchen market revealed that Rui is priced at Tk 320-340 per kg, Tilapia at Tk 150-200, Pangasius at Tk 180-200, farmed Koi at Tk 150-200 and medium-sized shrimp at Tk 700-750.
Hilsa catches have increased in the Bay of Bengal, though they are yet to arrive in local markets, said Mona Munsi, a trader at Rupsha kitchen market.
Meat prices, however, remain stable. Md Munna, a meat trader in Farazipara, said beef and mutton prices have not changed post-Eid, although demand has dipped. People are still buying meat for social occasions, especially weddings.
The Khulna District Administration, KCC, KMP and the Khulna Consumers Rights Association are actively monitoring market prices to prevent manipulation.
Md Walid Bin Habib, Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection in Khulna, said that they are vigilantly tracking prices and have taken action against dishonest traders following complaints.
"Market monitoring is continuing after Eid-ul-Azha to ensure fair pricing," he added.
