GAIBANDHA, Feb 26, 2025 (BSS) - Boro farming is nearing completion at all seven upazilas of the district this season, with farmers eagerly anticipating a good yield.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target to bring a total of 1, 29,015 hectares of land under the Boro cultivation this year with the production target of 5,94, 161 metric tons of rice.
Of the total, some 21,280 hectares of land would be brought under cultivation at Sadar upazila, 15,630 in Sadullapur upazila, 12,559 in Palashbari upazila, 30,956 in Gobindaganj upazila, 26,790 in Sundarganj upazila, 14,500 in Shaghata upazila and 7,300 in Fulchhari upazila.
The farmers of the district are busy preparing their land and transplanting Boro seedlings from seedbeds, hoping for a yield as good as last year's production, said Lal Miah, a farmer of Barobaldia village under Sadar upazila.
To bring the land under cultivation, the farmers prepared seedbeds on 5,822 hectares of low land where the seedlings have grown well due to favorable climatic conditions, said DAE official Rostam Ali.
To make the cultivation a grand success, necessary measures have been taken to supply fertilizers, insecticides, electricity, and other agri-inputs to the farmers at fair prices, side by side with ensuring irrigation facilities, he added.
Besides, the banks, including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, have taken initiatives to disburse loans among the farmers on easy terms to facilitate paddy farming.
To make the Boro farming a grand success, the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority is providing irrigation to the land through 456 deep tube wells and 84 LLP (low lift pump), said Md. Shafiqul Islam.
Talking to the BSS, deputy director of DAE Khorshed Alam Sarker said over 95 percent of the farming of Boro paddy has already been completed till February 25, and it would continue till March 15.
