DHAKA, May 8, 2025 (BSS) - A mobile court conducted a drive in the Kakalia and Shakta areas of Keraniganj today, targeting illegal battery factories.
The drive was jointly carried out by the Dhaka District Office and the Monitoring and Enforcement Wing of the Department of Environment (DoE).
Two illegal battery factories -- Sagar Battery House and Yespa Metal -- located on Abdus Salam Chairman Road - were sealed off during the drive. Their utility connections were severed and two separate cases were filed to this end.
It was found that a road in the area had been constructed using zinc factory waste. The factory owners were ordered to remove this hazardous waste within seven days.
The mobile court was led by DoE Executive Magistrate Md Rezwan-ul-Islam. A team from Bangladesh Police extended support during the drive, said a press release of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry.
Additionally, in separate mobile court drives under the Air Pollution (Control) Rules 2022, two cases were filed and Taka 60,000 were realised from polluters in Banglamotor and Jatrabari areas of Dhaka. One factory’s utility connection was also disconnected.
Under the Noise Pollution (Control) Rules 2006, drives in Eskaton and Dhamrai resulted in 13 cases and fines totaling Taka 13,500.
Another mobile court operation against black smoke emissions in the Tejgaon industrial area led to 10 cases and fines amounting to Taka 31,500.
The DoE will continue such enforcement actions to protect the environment, the press release said.
