Stocks extends losing streak

DHAKA, May 11, 2026 (BSS) - Stocks today extended its losing streak as cautious investors remained sidelined amid the absence of strong market catalysts and continued monitoring of developments surrounding Middle East ceasefire negotiations.

The broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, declined by 15.7 points to close at 5,205 points, down from 5,221 points in the previous trading session.

Market analysts said sustained selling pressure persisted from the opening bell, particularly in banking and insurance stocks, while investors shifted focus toward small-cap and momentum-driven issues.

Despite active participation, market turnover at the Dhaka bourse edged down by 1.7 percent to Taka 7.2 billion from Taka 7.3 billion in the previous session.

Among the major sectors, Engineering accounted for the highest share of turnover at 13.8 percent, followed by Textile at 11.3 percent and General Insurance at 10.9 percent.

Sectoral performance remained mixed during the session. The Jute sector posted the highest gain with a 5.0 percent rise, followed by Paper with 4.2 percent and Tannery with 1.3 percent.

On the losing side, the Services sector suffered the sharpest correction, falling 3.1 percent, while General Insurance and Financial Institutions declined by 1.3 percent and 1.0 percent respectively.

Out of the 396 issues traded on the Dhaka bourse, 142 advanced, 188 declined and 66 remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange closed on a mixed note. The Selective Categories' Index (CSCX) advanced by 2.8 points, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) shed 3.9 points at the close of trading.
