Stocks retreat after series of positive sessions

DHAKA, April 27, 2026 (BSS) - Stocks today retreated after a series of positive sessions, as cautious investors reshuffled their portfolios amid the ongoing earnings season and evolving domestic and global developments.

The benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), DSEX, declined by 15.6 points to close at 5,301, down from 5,316 in the previous session.

Market analysts said the bourse started on a firm note and maintained a positive trend through mid-session, but failed to sustain momentum in the final hour due to broad-based selling pressure, which dragged the indices into negative territory at the close.

Despite the decline in indices, turnover remained relatively resilient, though it edged down by 2.7 percent to Taka 9.5 billion compared to Taka 9.8 billion in the previous trading session.

On the sectoral front, General Insurance dominated the turnover chart with a 16.1 percent share, followed by Bank (13.0 percent) and Textile (11.6 percent).

Most sectors ended in the red, with Ceramic, Paper and Textile sectors registering notable corrections of 2.0 percent, 1.3 percent and 1.3 percent respectively. However, the General Insurance sector stood out as the sole gainer, advancing by 2.9 percent during the session.

Out of the 397 issues traded, 102 advanced, 220 declined and 74 remained unchanged, reflecting a broadly negative market sentiment.

Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower. The Selective Categories Index (CSCX) fell by 18.9 points, while the All Share Price Index (CASPI) dropped by 35.8 points at the close of trading.
