DHAKA, Jan 29, 2026 (BSS) - Three readymade garment (RMG) factories in Bangladesh have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), with one factory achieving the highest score globally.
HAMS Garments Ltd, located in Sreepur of Gazipur, secured Platinum certification under the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4 rating system after scoring 108 points, the highest score recorded worldwide so far under this category.
Meanwhile, Ecotrims Bangladesh Ltd – Unit 1, situated in Telihati union of Gazipur, obtained Gold certification under the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4.1 rating system with 70 points.
Another factory, NAFA Apparels Ltd – Unit 1, located in Kaliakoir of Gazipur, also achieved Gold certification under the LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 rating system after scoring 65 points.
With the addition of these three factories, the total number of LEED-certified garment factories in Bangladesh has risen to 273, including 115 Platinum and 139 Gold certified units.
Bangladesh also continues to dominate global rankings, now hosting 69 of the world's top 100 highest-rated LEED-certified factories, reaffirming the country's leadership in sustainable and environmentally compliant apparel manufacturing.
Talking to BSS, Mohiuddin Rubel, former director, BGMEA and Managing Director, Bangladesh Apparel Exchange said that HAMS Garments Ltd.’s achievement of securing USGBC LEED Platinum certification with a score of 108 out of 110 is a global record, being the highest rated LEED Certified RMG factory in the world.
With the global manufacturing landscape increasingly shaped by climate responsibility, resource efficiency, and ESG scrutiny, he said such an achievement signifies the highest level of environmental performance currently achievable under internationally recognized standards.
Rubel, also the Additional Managing Director, Denim Expert Ltd. said what makes the milestone particularly significant is that it was achieved within the context of Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garment sector—an industry often discussed globally through the lens of scale rather than sustainability. “This achievement challenges outdated perceptions and reinforces a growing reality: sustainability in Bangladesh is no longer confined to pilot projects or niche factories,”
He also said this achievement adds momentum to Bangladesh’s broader sustainability transition. “With hundreds of green garment factories already in operation, this record-setting performance by HAMS Garments Ltd. raises the benchmark for what is possible and encourages the industry to move beyond minimum compliance toward measurable excellence. It also demonstrates that climate-aligned industrial growth and export success do not have to be mutually exclusive,”
As Bangladesh prepares for challenges linked to LDC graduation, the BGMEA former director said carbon regulations, and shifting global trade dynamics, sustainability leadership will increasingly define industrial credibility. “Achievements like this show that Bangladesh is not merely adapting to global expectations, it is actively shaping them.”
