DHAKA, Oct 19, 2025 (BSS) – President of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Taskeen Ahmed today urged the authorities concerned to implement effective measures to improve fire safety and overall security at all levels of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), as well as at other ports.
“I have expressed grave concern over the fire incident that occurred at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. A high-powered investigating team should determine the reasons behind this catastrophe and present the findings publicly,” he said in a statement issued today.
He noted that ports are vital for the country’s trade and economy. Therefore, it is essential to take effective measures to enhance fire safety and firefighting capacity, especially in these critical facilities.
Taskeen Ahmed pointed out that apart from passenger services, HSIA, the principal airport of the country, is predominantly used by the business community for international trade, import, and export activities.
He also observed that such unexpected incidents might undermine entrepreneurs’ confidence and disrupt business operations.
As cargo handling activities at the airport remained closed during the weekend (Friday and Saturday), relevant stakeholders expressed concern that the extent of the damage could be substantial.
Under these circumstances, the DCCI President urged that the extent of damage to the awaited goods at the Cargo Village caused by the fire should be determined as soon as possible.
He also called on the concerned authorities to ensure prompt compensation for affected entrepreneurs.
Taskeen Ahmed further urged the government to consider keeping cargo handling operational even during weekends to maintain smooth business operations.
He also emphasized ensuring necessary medical treatment for victims of the fire incident and wished them a speedy recovery.
