NILPHAMARI, Aug 19, 2025 (BSS) - Ruma Adhikari, a dweller of Uttar Balapara village of Kundapukur union in Nilphamari Sadar upazila, has become a successful agricultural entrepreneur by producing late variety of mangoes. 

Various types of ripe mangoes are hanging on the trees in her garden even after the end of the mango season.

Talking to BSS, Ruma Adhikari said that she had a dream of becoming an entrepreneur by protecting the environment and nature. 

"After completing my master's degree in social science from Rajshahi College in 2004, I was gradually moving towards fulfilling that dream. I developed a mango orchard of various advanced varieties on one acre of land," she added.

There are 300 mango trees of various foreign varieties of mangoes in Ruma's garden. These include King of Chakapat, Changmai, Dokmai, Katimon, Banana, Red Palmer, Sraboni, Honey Dew, Four kg and many others. After watching YouTube, she got idea about these improved varieties.

Ruma Adhikari said that the mango trees of these varieties bloom in March and mature in August-September. Being late varieties, these mangoes ripen relatively late. These varieties of mangoes can be marketed after the end of the local mango season. So, the market price of the mangos is good. As a result, the profit is high.

She said that in the year of her master's degree, she got married to Dulal Adhikari of Uttar Balapara village of Kundapukur union in Nilphamari Sadar upazila. Her husband works as a sub-inspector of the police. Ruma's father, Ramoni Mohan Roy, worked in the police. After marriage, she spent a long time in Rangpur due to her husband's job.

Then in 2023, Ruma returned to her husband's ancestral home and planted 300 mango seedlings of different species on one acre of land. Along with mangoes, she planted the famous Darjeeling orange seedlings on the same land. The garden is surrounded by dragon and betel nut trees. It cost her more than Taka three lakh to develop the garden.

She named the organic garden 'Vrindavan Organic Agro Farm'. She said that since it is completely organic, the yield will double every year. The entrepreneur expects to earn Taka 35 to Taka 40 lakh every year if orange, dragon and betel nut grow in the garden along with mangoes.
