BANDARBAN, July 6, 2026 (BSS) – Gushing waters caused by heavy downpour in the hilly Sangu River forced the local administration of scenic Thanchhi upazila here to suspend tourism for at least 48 hours.
“The Sangu has became turbulent with inflated waters surpassing its bank lines disrupting communications of the upazila headquarters’ with tourist spots like Tindu and Remakri,” Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) or administrative chief of Thanchhi Mohammad Abdullah Al- Faisal said.
He said the scenario forced the administration to discourage tourists from visiting the upazila for at least 48 hours as the weather condition could as well cause landslides in the hilly areas of the sub-district.
Faisal added all types of waterway transport remained suspended from Monday morning due to gushing waters of the Sangu that originates in the North Arakan Hills of Myanmar and enters into Bangladesh through Thanchhi upazila.
“People from remote areas even could not move to the upazila headquarters even for any emergency in this scenario,” he said.
The UNO said tourism spots would be reopened when the weather situation improved and added that tourists who were now staying in Thanchhi were asked to stay indoors or at safer places.
