SUNAMGANJ, March 24, 2026 (BSS) - Sunamganj, widely known as the capital of haors and a region rich in natural beauty, has become a major attraction for tourists during the Eid holidays.
Since Saturday, thousands of visitors from across the country have been flocking to its scenic and cultural landmarks with family and friends.
Jalalabad city remains a central hub for tourists, offering a blend of historical and cultural attractions. Visitors are seen exploring notable sites such as the residence of legendary poet Hasan Raja, Dolura Shaheed Memorial and Darsi Park.
Beyond the town, several natural destinations are drawing significant attention. These include Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur upazila along with Niladri Lake (Shaheed Siraj Lake), Jadukata River, Barke Tila, Joynal Abedin Shishu Park, and the haor areas of Basbhimbarpur.
Other attractions across the district include the shrine of Hazrat Shah Arfeni (R.A.) at the foothills of the Meghalaya mountains, Tokerghat Shaheed Memorial, Rajargaon Advaita Prabhu Akhra, Garkati Temple, Lakma Hill, Lalghat waterfall, and the scenic villages of Karigarha and Rajai.
In Chhatak upazila, the industrial landscape, shopping areas such as Popor Mall, and the Manipuri community-dominated Baganbari have also gained attention from visitors.
Meanwhile, Doarabazar upazila is witnessing a steady influx of tourists to sites such as Bashtala Shaheed Memorial, the martyrs’ graveyard, Tekerghat Gas Field, the border river Khasiyamara, and the ethnic village of Jhumgaon.
Local resident Shafiqul Islam from Tahirpur said that, as in previous years, major tourist destinations like Tanguar Haor are drawing large crowds during Eid-ul-Fitr, although turnout appears slightly lower compared to earlier years.
Tourists expressed admiration for the region’s natural beauty. Mim, a visitor, said the border area’s scenic landscapes are uniquely captivating and cannot be fully appreciated without firsthand experience. Visitors from Dhaka echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the distinct charm of Sunamganj’s natural environment.
To ensure the safety and convenience of visitors, district authorities have taken enhanced security measures. Superintendent of Police Zakri Hossain confirmed that police and fire service personnel have been deployed at key locations, especially in border areas.
District Administrator Dr. Mohammad Iliyas Mia said that emergency services are on high alert, with increased patrols by law enforcement and administrative teams to facilitate a safe and smooth travel experience for tourists.
