LALMONIRHAT, Aug 26, 2025 (BSS) – Bullock cart was once an integral part of rural life across the country, but now it has become rare due to modernization and mechanization.

From carrying paddy and jute to transporting people from one place to another, Bullock cart was an essential part of the rural areas across the country, including northern region.

It was especially reliable for transporting agricultural products and people. However, with the rapid advancement of mechanical civilization, this slow and environment friendly vehicle is disappearing.

History shows that bullock carts were also deeply connected to ancient civilizations, not just Bangladesh. Wheeled vehicles appeared in Mesopotamia during the middle of the fourth millennium BC and the Sindhu Civilization in the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent around 1600-1500 BC. Bullock carts were one of these ancient vehicles.

In this regard, school teacher Masud Rana Biplob said that in agricultural-dependent communities including Lalmonirhat, once the bullock cart was the main source of people's movement and goods transportation.

Now, due to modern mechanical vehicles, its use has decreased significantly, he added.

Farmer Abu Salam, a resident of the Mahendranagar Union under the district recalled that once bullock carts were used for everything from carrying paddy to being part of the wedding processions.

It was completely a fuel-free, pollution-free and accident-free transport, he added.

This ancient vehicle of rural life has gradually disappeared, but its golden days in history are still alive in the pages of memory.
