Tourists flock at Satgambuj Mosque, adjacent areas to enjoy Eid vacation

KHULNA, June 11, 2025 (BSS)- A large number of tourists from different parts of the country gathered at Shatgambuj Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage site, during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. 

Due to a three-month travel ban in the Sundarbans, the visitors have preferred other tourist spots surrounding the area for amusement to enjoy their Eid holiday. 

Tourist police and officials of the Department of Archaeology are struggling to manage the huge crowd of tourists.

From morning to evening people of all ages including women and children are flocking around the mosque premises for leisure.

Many visitors have turned up with their families to witness this symbol of Islamic heritage. Visitors expressed their joy during the visit to the historic site.

According to the Department of Archaeology, over 10 thousand tourists visited the mosque in the past three days, generating revenue of Tk 2.95 lakh. 

Nearby tourist spots such as the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R), historic monuments and cultural sites at Muniganj, Daratana Bridge and the Rayenda River View Eco Park in Sharankhola Upazila also remain in the center of attractions.

Visitors admired the architectural beauty of the mosque and explored the Bagerhat Museum, which showcases archaeological artifacts once used by Khan Jahan Ali (R). Many tourists took photos of the over 650-year-old heritage structure. 

Tourist police, along with members of the district police, ensured safety and security for the large crowd, and visitors expressed satisfaction over the safety measures.

Mokammel Hossain and his wife arrived here from Cumilla. He told BSS that they couldn’t travel anywhere during Eid for the last two years. 

“We had observed Eid with our parents at village home, and this year I along with my wife could come here to see the Satgambuj Mosque,” he said adding “it’s a wonderful experience.”

Ariful Islam, who came with six family members from Barisal said, he has trying to visit Satgambuj Mosaue for longtime, and finally he could come here during this Eid holidays. 

“This glorious piece of Islamic history is incredible. My entire family was thrilled by the beauty of the mosque. Spending time here on Eid is truly special. We want to share the beauty of this historical monument with the rest of the world,” he said.

Another visitor, Arifa Yasmin who came from Satkhira, said, she has come with her two children. After seeing the mosque, they enjoyed the rides and a great time.

OC of the Tourist Police, Bagerhat Zone Mohammad Nurul Islam said tourist police along with district police have been working to ensure security of the visitors.

Mohammad Zayed, custodian of the Department of Archaeology in Bagerhat said every year during Eid, a large number of visitors come here. A 10-day Eid vacation helped the Eid holidaymakers to explore long distanced tourist spots, he said.
