Shoriful joins Ambrose in rare feat on Australian soil

DHAKA, Aug 23, 2026 (BSS)—Bangladesh left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam produced a remarkable performance in the second Test against Australia amid his side’s innings and 51-run defeat as he became the first bowler in 33 years after West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose to take seven wickets in a Test innings on Australian soil.

Shoriful's figures marked his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket and the best bowling performance by a Bangladeshi bowler outside the country. His 7-48 is also the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler against Australia and by a Bangladeshi fast bowler in Test cricket.

In doing so, he became the first visiting bowler since Ambrose in 1993 to claim seven wickets in a Test innings on Australian soil.

Ambrose took seven for 25 against Australia at the WACA Ground in Perth in 1993. At one stage of that spell, the West Indies great had taken seven wickets while conceding only one run.

The left-arm seamer troubled Australia's batters with sharp bouncers and late in swing.

Before this Test, Shoriful hadn’t even a five-wicket haul but his excellent bowling earned him a place in the history.

However, despite his record bowling, Australia managed to put up 210 and took a 146-run. Bangladesh were bowled out for 64 in the first innings, before being all out for 95 in the second innings to taste an innings and 51-run defeat inside two days.
