DHAKA, Aug 16, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has hailed his team's historic victory, saying the growing desire among the country's fast bowlers to play and excel in Test cricket has been a major change in their approach.

The fast bowlers were instrumental in Bangladesh's victory in the first cricket Test against Australia, with Hasan Mahmudu producing a spell of ages. 

Hasan ended the match with 9-111, including 6-55 in the first innings, the maiden five-wicket haul by a Bangladeshi bowler on Australian soil. Bangladesh's three-pronged fast bowlers took all 10 wickets in the first innings, which was only the second instance in their history.

Thanks to their performance, Bangladesh eventually won the Test by nine wickets in a place where winning is considered as toughest assignment.

Shanto said Bangladesh's pacers hunger to establish themselves as world class bowlers is a treat to watch.

"That is the biggest change for Bangladesh in Test format. Earlier, five years ago, pacers didn't want to play Tests. But we've been playing lots of Test cricket and they are giving importance to Test format. They want to play, want to perform, want to be world class. That is the mindset they now have," Shanto said after the match.

He also credited senior players Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque for encouraging the younger bowlers to give Test cricket more importance.

"The two senior batters cherished the Test cricket and they spread it to the young generations," he remarked.

Shanto praised Tanzid Hasan Tamim for showing maturity in his approach after the opener struck his maiden Test century in Bangladesh's historic victory over Australia.

"Tanzid attacks in the white-ball game, but in this Test he was calm and played shots on the ball's merit. As a top-order batter, we want him to have impact and he did it," he added.

Shanto termed the victory as Bangladesh's biggest achievement in any format and said the team would now look to produce more special performances.

"This is the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format. Going forward, we want to do something special in the future," he said.

Bangladesh will now turn their attention to the next Test in Mackay, where Shanto stressed the importance of maintaining discipline throughout the five-day contest.

"We have that evidence but we have to play good cricket. We have to play five days of good cricket. If we play session by session, if the lower order keeps chipping in, those are the things," he said.
