RANGPUR, July 5, 2026 (BSS) - The 'Shaheed Abu Sayeed Inter-Departmental 
Football Tournament 2026 (Season-2)' was inaugurated in a very emotional and 
festive atmosphere at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on Sunday. 
 
Most Monowara Begum, mother of the hero of the July Uprising, Shaheed Abu 
Sayeed, inaugurated the tournament by hoisting of the national flag and 
releasing balloons at the central football field of the university. 
 
Vice-chancellor of BRUR Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali attended the function as 
the chief guest.

The university's Proctor, Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman, was present as the 
special guest. 
 
The tournament Convener and Director of the Office of The Physical Education 
Md Ismail Hossain presided over the event, and Shaheed Abu Sayeed's elder 
brothers Md Ramzan Ali and Md Bakul Mia were present. 

In his speech, the Vice-chancellor called Shaheed Abu Sayeed a "national 
hero" and said that the memory of the heroes of the July 24 Uprising and the 
spirit of July should be kept alive among us forever. 

At this time, he said that as per the promise of the University Grants 
Commission, tenders have been invited for the construction of "Abu Sayeed 
Gate" in the university and its construction work will start very soon. 

He also said that out of the four new halls being built under the ongoing 
mega project of the university, one of the halls will be named "Shaheed Abu 
Sayeed Hall". 

The Vice-Chancellor also expressed hope that this tournament will be 
successfully completed without any chaos with the spontaneous cooperation of 
teachers, students and officials. 
 
Twenty-two male teams with one from each of all 22 departments of the 
university and four separate female teams are participating in the Shaheed 
Abu Sayeed Inter-Departmental Football Tournament 2026 (Season-2)' this time.
 
The male teams of the Department of Geography and Environmental Science and 
the Department of Marketing of the university competed in the opening match 
today.
