DHAKA, June 14, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Women's team kicked off their ICC
Women's T20 World Cup campaign in impressive fashion, crushing the
Netherlands by six wickets in their Group 1 match at Edgbaston today.
Chasing 140 for victory after the Dutch posted 139-8, Bangladesh reached the
target with five balls to spare, thanks largely to a blistering half-century
from opener Juairia Ferdous.
Juairia smashed 50 off just 33 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes, to
provide Bangladesh with a flying start. She shared a crucial 67-run opening
stand with Dilara Akhtar, laying the foundation for the successful chase.
The partnership came in just 7.5 overs, with Juairia contributing the bulk of
the runs before her dismissal. Bangladesh then suffered a brief wobble as
captain Nigar Sultana was caught at point off Caroline de Lange in the next
ball after Juairia's departure.
Dilara made 26 from 23 balls before becoming the third batter dismissed with
the score at 79-3 in 10.2 overs. Bangladesh slipped to 85-4 when Sobhana
Mostary was out for 4.
However, Sharmin Akhter and Shorna Akhter ensured there would be no further
setbacks. The pair added an unbeaten 56-run partnership for the fifth wicket
to steer Bangladesh home comfortably.
Sharmin remained unbeaten on 37 off 32 balls, while Shorna contributed an
unbeaten 18 from 17 deliveries.
Earlier, Netherlands captain Babette de Leede top-scored with 50 as her side
finished on 139-8 after being sent in to bat.
For Bangladesh, pacer Marufa Akter was the most successful bowler, claiming
2-31.
Bangladesh will next face defending champions Australia at Headingley on
Wednesday as they look to build on their winning start to the tournament.
