Liton ends Mirpur fifty drought with gritty knock against Australia

DHAKA, June 14, 2026 (BSS) — Bangladesh wicket-keeper Liton Das finally broke his ODI half-century drought at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium with a determined unbeaten 58 in the third and final ODI against Australia.

Liton's ODI journey began at Mirpur against India in 2015, where he scored just 8 runs on debut. Over the next 11 years, he established himself as one of Bangladesh's premier batters, compiling numerous memorable innings and several international centuries.

Yet, a fifty in ODI cricket at Mirpur remained elusive.

That wait ended against Australia as Liton reached the landmark in dramatic fashion. After suffering a leg-muscle strain and retiring hurt on 48, he returned later in the innings and completed his half-century with a two-run shot off the final ball of the 49th over.

The wicketkeeper-batter eventually finished unbeaten on 58, registering not only his maiden ODI fifty at Mirpur but also his first half century against Australia.

Before the match, Liton's record at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium had been surprisingly modest.

In 28 ODI innings at the venue, he had failed to score a fifty, accumulating just 439 runs at an average slightly above 17. A batter renowned for his fluent strokeplay and career strike rate of around 85, he had also struggled to maintain a strike rate of 70 in Mirpur.

Although his unbeaten 58 came at a strike rate of 74, the innings carried far greater significance than the numbers suggested.

Liton had shown signs of regaining form at the venue in recent months, producing several scores above 40 during series against Pakistan and New Zealand. However, he repeatedly fell short of converting those starts into a fifty.

Against Australia, he finally erased that blemish.

Bangladesh were under pressure at 61-3 when Liton joined forces with Towhid Hridoy. The pair added a crucial 92-run partnership that steadied the innings and restored momentum. Their stand laid the foundation for a competitive total in fact.
