Shaheen backs youngsters to shine in Bangladesh ODI series

DHAKA, March 10, 2026 (BSS)— Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi believes the youngsters in his squad will be highly motivated to showcase their skills as Pakistan take on Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series starting tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

Much of the discussion ahead of the series has centred on Pakistan’s decision to send a young squad that includes six uncapped players. Speaking to reporters at the pre-match press conference today, Shaheen said the Bangladesh tour provides a valuable opportunity for the young cricketers as Pakistan look to build a team with the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in mind.

“We just want to give opportunities to our youngsters because they are our future,” Shaheen said.

“So we want to give them chances against Bangladesh. When the time comes, they will know their roles and what is expected in the future. We need to prepare our team for the World Cup and this series is a good opportunity for the youngsters to go out and show their skills.”

Shaheen also confirmed that Saim Ayub will make his ODI debut after impressing in T20 cricket. He added that up to three players could make their debut in the first ODI against Bangladesh.

“Maybe three players can make their debut tomorrow. Of course Saim Ayub will be there. He has been a top performer in T20 and also in List A cricket for Pakistan,” he said.

“There will also be Omair bin Yousuf, who will open the innings, and Sahibzada Farhan will bat at No.3. So there could be three debutants and I hope they will play their natural game and show their skills. As a team we are excited to see them play for Pakistan, not just for this series but for the future as well,” he added.

During West Indies national cricket team’s last tour of Bangladesh, the visitors created history by bowling all 50 overs with spin in one ODI as the pitch heavily assisted the spinners.

However, Shaheen believes such conditions are unlikely this time.

“I don’t think that will happen again this time,” he said. “Pakistan are known for fast bowling and I will definitely rely on our pacers to take wickets, while the spinners can also contribute,” he added.
