Tigresses crush PNG in T20 World Cup Qualifiers

DHAKA, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Women's team secured their second straight victory in ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers, thrashing Papua New Guinea by 30 runs at Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground, Kirtipur in Nepal today.

Put into bat first, the Tigresses compiled a respectable 168-5, thanks to a blistering 14 ball-37 from Shorna Akter.

Shorna hammered one and four sixes in her knock with the four sixes being highest by a Bangladesh female batter in Women's T20 Internationals, surpassing Ayesha Akhter's three sixes in an innings. 

Opener Dilara Akter made 29 ball-35 to give the side a good start before Sharmin Akter Supta and Sobhana Mostary gave the impetus in middle order.

Mostary hit 34 off 24 with two fours and as many sixes while Supta made 28.

In reply, Papua New Guinea managed to score 138-9 before losing the game. Captain Brenda Tau was the top-scorer for the side with 35 while Sibona Jimmy contributed 28.

A total of seven Bangladesh players bowled in the match with six of them taking one wicket apiece. Only Sultana Khatun couldn't put her name in the wicket-taker list. 

Bangladesh will take on Namibia and Ireland on January 22 and 24 respectively in their next two matches of Group A.
 
The top three teams from Group A will advance to the Super Six stage, where they will face the top three sides from Group B.

The Group B included hosts Nepal, Thailand, Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Scotland.

The top four teams from the Super Six will qualify for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup be held in England and Wales in June-July this year.
