Bangladesh U19 beat South Africa to clinch tri-series trophy

DHAKA, Aug 10, 2025 (BSS)—Rizan Hossain came up with a sterling all-round performance as Bangladesh Under-19 team clinched the tri-nation series trophy, thrashing South Africa Under-19 by 33 runs in the tournament’s final today at Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe.

The Bangladesh youngsters put on 269-5, thanks to a blistering 96 ball-95 from middle order batter Rizan Hossain who also led the side in bowling and claimed 5-34 in 8.4 overs to wrap up South Africa for 236 in 48.4 overs

Pacer Al Fahad grabbed 3-50 and Shadhin Islam took 2-34 to complement Rizan in thwarting South Africa.

Rizan struck 10 fours in his 96 ball-95, which was key in steering the side past 250  after a top order collapse that saw Bangladesh reduced to 65-3 after being asked to bat first. 

He got ably support from Kalam Siddiki who made 65. Together they combined for a 117-run for the fourth wicket to steady the innings. 

Bandile Mbatha who took highest two wickets for 50 runs for South Africa broke the partnership by dismissing Kalam.

Rizan looked set for his century but was denied as he was trapped run-out. Abdullah then hammered 29 ball-38 not out to help the side finish the things well.

South Africa made a strong start with their openers Jorich Van Schalwyk and Adnaan Lagadien adding 59 runs. 

Lagadien was particularly in supreme touch, making a mockery with Bangladesh bowlers.

Al Fahad brought he side back into the contest by dismissing two openers with Lagadien hitting 40 off 31. 

Rizan Hossain appeared into the stage to take the wicket of South African captain Muhammad Bulbulia who made 31 and Armaan Manack for 8.

His double strike further pegged back the South African innings but the Proteas youngsters refused to give up.

Ntando Soni and Bandile Mbatha gave Bangladesh some torrid time before Rizan dismissed both of them to edge the side closer to the victory. Soni made 32 ball-34 while Mbatha scored 29. 

Rizan then completed his five-wicket haul and at the same time wrapped up South African innings by rattling the stump of Bayanda Majola for a duck.

Zimbabwe were the other team in the tri-nation tournament but lost all six matches in the group phase.
