Rangpur stun BBL champions Hobart by 1 run in GSL

DHAKA, July 14, 2025 (BSS)- Rangpur Riders sealed their second straight victory in the Global Super League (GSL), edging past Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) champions Hobart Hurricanes by 1 runs in a breathtaking contest at Guyana National Stadium in Providence, Guyana yesterday night.

Pacer Syed Khaled Ahmed led the charge with 4-26 as the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) franchise Rangpur kept them unbeaten in the tournament.

Rangpur, also the defending champions of GSL put up 151-6 after being asked to bat first with their Caribbean recruit Kyle Mayers hitting 42 ball-67, a knock laced with eight fours and two sixes.

Opener Ibrahim Zadran made 31 and gave the initial impetus amid the wickets tumbling around him.

Hobart's Pakistan recruit Usama Mir ripped through Rangpur with 3-15 but
Mayers kept the runs flowing and helped the side go past 150.

Hobart captain Ben McDermott gave the side a flying start in the chase of 152 but Rangpur's disciplined bowling attack eventually bowled them out for 150 in 20 overs after a nerve-wrecking last over.

McDermott made 19 ball-34 with five fours and one six but the top-scorer was Mohammad Nabi with 44.

Nabi in fact kept the hopes alive for Hobart as Khaled and Iftekhar Ahmed
tormented them in the middle overs.

Needing 22 off 12 deliveries, Nabi swiped the first ball of the 19th over
from Khaled Ahmed for six but the twists still came as Khaled dismissed
Fabian Allen and Raf Macmillan in consecutive balls to leave Hurricanes
needing 12 off the final over.

Azmatullah Omarzai was given the last over, Nabi swiped him for six and
looked to have the game won before he fell for 44 to leave three runs needed off the last ball.

Billy Stanlake was run out off the final ball to give Rangpur Riders the
victory by just one run as a breathless encounter came to a close in Guyana.

Rangpur will take on Dubai Capitals in their third game on Wednesday. A
victory in that match will keep them in good stead for the final.
