SYDNEY, July 6, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - Australian Rules bosses launched an investigation Thursday after "nude and graphic" images purportedly showing dozens of current and former players were leaked on social media.
The sport's integrity unit said it had notified police across multiple states and was working with the nation's eSafety Commissioner to get them removed.
"There appears to have been significant work involved in gathering the images and creating files for distribution," the Australian Football League said in a statement, while noting that some of the material had yet to be verified.
"The AFL has no information regarding why the personal images have been circulated illegally and without consent or what the motive is in doing so."
Local media said they were "nude and graphic" in nature and involved more than 45 players.
The AFL Players' Association called the leak an "appalling and disgusting act".
"While it is important to note that some of the images may not be legitimate, this is an appalling and disgusting act and a likely unlawful breach of privacy that is unacceptable," association chief Paul Marsh told reporters.
"We ask the public to treat this matter seriously by not seeking out or sharing any of these photos and respecting the rights and privacy of those impacted."
The AFL said it was offering welfare support to players involved. It gave no information about those targeted by the leak.
Australian Rules, similar to Ireland's Gaelic football, is the country's most popular spectator sport.
