Moeen pins hope on leg-spinner Rashid to deal with Tigers

DHAKA, Feb 28, 2023 (BSS) - England all-rounder Moeen Ali believes Adil Rashid's leg-spin would determine the course of the match when everyone talks about Bangladesh's left-arm spinners.

While England are preparing for Bangladesh's spin test, Moeen said Rashid's leg-spin would give them some edge over the hosts in the three-match ODI series, that starts tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

"I think Rashid is a brilliant spinner anyway in most conditions. So, he's a threat to any team we play against in any part of the world. But whether it makes a big difference in terms of finger spinners, I know finger spinners in Bangladesh, in particular, are probably the way forward, anywhere generally," Moeen said here today.

"But doesn't mean a leg-spinner can't bowl well here. I think they can and Rashid has done it before in Test matches. So, yeah, I don't think it would make too much of a difference, but we have Rashid who is one of our best bowlers," he added.

Interestingly, Bangladesh historically struggled against leg-spinners but such was the spin strength at home condition that they overcame that challenges time and again.

England though has been the only visitor to win a ODI series in Bangladesh since 2015, they have come off eight defeats in 10 matches recently.

Moeen said they might loss some matches but the return of Mark Wood, Jofra Archer gave them the balance which they required.

"It (losing eight out of 10 matches) doesn't really matter who are the favourites. I think Bangladesh in their own conditions are very good. And we know that we have lost eight in the last 10 but we are also the champions of the world and have done well," Moeen revealed.

"Before that actually, we haven't really had our best team for a lot of the time recently. But obviously Woody is here. Jofra is here and we got new guys like Will Jacks and these guys on the side as well. So very exciting to have this group of players here. And in terms of favourites, it doesn't matter until the end of the series," he added.

"When you come to these places you expect good spinners bowling, good spin bowling. They're very good we know, how well they've done over the years here and Bangladesh as a team have done really well. But it's not just their spinners, their seamers are very good as well, and how we know that we've prepared the best we can to play them."

The all-rounder further said they won't compromise with their attacking approach whatever the wicket is.

"We've done it all around the world. It's a different challenge and probably a different sort of plan, but the mindset is always the same. And, if somebody bowls badly on any sort of surface, you try and put them away. So we're confident, we got the players to play well here," he added.
