RAJSHAHI, July 21, 2026 (BSS) - The heritage of Mohanpur's GI-recognized betel leaf has gained a
visible identity with the unveiling of a boundary pillar featuring a betel leaf symbol at the
entrance to the upazila.
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Kazi Shahidul Islam unveiled the plaque of the boundary pillar,
built beside the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway in the Basantakedar area of Mougachi Union under the
upazila, on Monday.
Locals believe the symbolic structure will not only mark the boundary of the upazila but also
further strengthen its agriculture-based heritage, economic potential and brand identity.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Deputy Commissioner said every upazila should have an
identity-bearing boundary pillar at its entrance. He said the Mohanpur boundary pillar had been
inaugurated after overcoming long-standing complexities.
He further said the Upazila Nirbahi Officer had been instructed to install an information board
titled 'Mohanpur at a Glance' beside the pillar so that visitors could easily learn about the
history, heritage, agriculture and potential of the upazila.
The Mohanpur Upazila Disaster Management Department implemented the project at a cost of Tk 3.5
lakh under the Rural Infrastructure Maintenance (TR) Programme of the Department of Disaster
Management.
Among others, Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fahima Binte Akhtar, Assistant Commissioner (Land)
Jobayda Sultana, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Engineer Tarikul Islam, Acting Chairman
of Mougachi Union Parishad Major Ali Biswas, freedom fighters, local public representatives and
dignitaries were present at the inauguration ceremony.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Engineer Tarikul Islam said betel leaf is the main
agricultural product of Mohanpur and is supplied to different districts across the country,
earning the upazila a distinct reputation.
"Therefore, the betel leaf symbol has been incorporated into the boundary pillar to highlight the
identity of the upazila. It is not just an infrastructure but also a symbol of Mohanpur's
agricultural heritage," he said.
Acting Chairman of Mougachi Union Parishad Major Ali Biswas said the long-standing expectation of
the local people had been fulfilled. With the addition of the betel leaf symbol, Mohanpur's
identity has become stronger.
Freedom fighter Golam Mortaza said, "The new generation will be able to learn about the heritage
of their area through this symbol."
