Dhaka to be developed as green city: DNCC administrator

DHAKA, Aug 22, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan has said Dhaka will be developed as a clean and green city with coordinated efforts.

“Dhaka city will be developed as a clean and green city not only through individual efforts but also with coordinated efforts and mass awareness”, he said while inaugurating tree plantation programme at city’s Uttara area today.

In light with the government directives, he said the non-government organizations have come forward to implement the long term greenery plan.

So, he told the function, that the  collective efforts of the public-private organizations will play significant role in building sustainable and eco-friendly city. 

Regarding the government effort in developing the Dhaka city, the DNCC chief said the government will enhance overall cooperation in the city’s greening programme, saying that the DNCC has taken initiative to plant 5 lakh trees in the city in next five years.

Of this initiative, nearly 55,000 trees already have been planted in the city.   

Particularly, the beautification and greening works on the road dividers of the main thoroughfares including Mahakhali, Farmgate and Bijoynagar are going on rapidly, he added. 

The administrator said as the Prime Minister has announced the programme of planting 25 crore trees across the country in next five years. So, special emphasis is being given to make the Dhaka city greener as part of the programme.  

Giving emphasis on developing Dhaka as a clean city, he said it is impossible for the city corporation alone to keep the city clean, saying that the citizens should be responsible and aware to maintain this.

As part of the programme of transforming Dhaka into a ‘clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka’ vision, the DNCC administrator urged the city dwellers to dispose plastic bottle, one-time cup, tissue, water container and other waste in designated bins or designated places rather than littering.

“The coordinated efforts and developing awareness of the citizen will make possible the to transform the vision into reality”, he told the function. 

Regional executive officer of DNCC zone-6 M Ziaur Rahman, Akij Food and Beverage Limited chief executive officer Syed Zahrul Alam, DNCC’s superintendent Engineer M Abul Quashem and other concern officials also were attend the programme.
