DHAKA, Aug 21, 2026 (BSS) - A colourful traditional boat race was held on the Buriganga River today to mark the 416th anniversary of Dhaka as part of the month-long ‘Hridoye Dhaka 416’ festival organised by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The race was held this afternoon from Kholamora Ghat to Wise Ghat, with six teams from different parts of the country taking part in the competition.
The event attracted thousands of spectators to both banks of the river, creating a festive atmosphere and bringing the capital’s rich cultural traditions to life.
Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shaikh Rabiul Alam attended the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest.
Dhaka-7 constituency MP Hamidur Rahman Hamid was present as the special guest.
The event was presided over by DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam.
From noon, large crowds gathered along both banks of the Buriganga to enjoy the race.
Hundreds of boats and trawlers carrying families and citizens also took positions on the river, turning the event into a vibrant celebration of Dhaka’s history, heritage and traditions.
