DHAKA, Aug 15, 2026 (BSS) - The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) today conducted a series of operations against passengers of multiple flights at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and seized smuggled goods worth nearly Tk 42.88 lakh.

Separate raids conducted by the Airport C-Shift officials, based on secret information, resulted in the seizure of 133 grams of gold, 2,589 pieces of conditionally importable medicines, 51 cartons of cigarettes, 31 kilograms of prohibited cream, 708 pieces of prohibited serum and six litres of foreign liquor. 

The total estimated market value of the seized goods is 42 lakh 88,000 taka, according to a NBR press release.

Acting on tip-off, CIID started deep surveillance on a passenger on Sri Lankan Airlines flight UL189 (Colombo-Dhaka).

After the flight landed at around noon and the passenger completed immigration and baggage collection, officials detained passenger Md Parvez while he was crossing the Green Channel and questioned and searched him.

At one stage, intelligence officials recovered 133 grams of gold cleverly concealed in a specially made secret compartment of the trolley he was using. They also found 2,589 pieces of specially concealed medicines in his luggage that are conditionally importable.

The passenger failed to produce the necessary valid permits and relevant documents required for importing the medicines. 

Consequently, the gold and medicines, along with the related goods, were seized.

The estimated value of the goods is Tk 30 lakh.

In a separate operation, six litres of Grant's-brand foreign liquor were seized after searching the baggage of passenger Jony Mia, who arrived on Air India flight AI237. 

The estimated market value of the liquor is Tk 1.20 lakh.

During combing of another baggage, a passenger named Md Mizanur Rahman who arrived on Emirates flight EK0586, 29 cartons of cigarettes and 708 pieces of Pakistani Whitening Serum were seized. 

The estimated market value of the seized goods is Tk 4,49,100.

In another operation, 30 kilograms of Gouri cream, which is prohibited for import, were seized after searching the baggage of passenger Suma Begum, who arrived on US-Bangla Airlines flight BS316. 

The estimated market value of the cream is Tk 6 lakh.

The operations conducted on multiple flights on the same day through a combination of intelligence information, passenger profiling and close surveillance reflect CIID's active efforts to prevent smuggling and illegal imports centred around the airport.
