KHULNA, Aug 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Youth and Sports Ministry has undertaken a Tk 200-crore mega project to develop the infrastructure of Khulna Divisional Stadium and Khulna Women's Sports Complex.

The project is now awaiting placement before the Pre-ECNEC meeting, while the long-awaited renovation and development work is expected to begin after the allocation of funds, a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) delegation said after inspecting the existing condition of the stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Abdullah Harun, BCB Director and Khulna City BNP General Secretary Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, BCB Director and Daily Lok Samaj Editor Shantunu Islam, and BCB Councillor Chowdhury Shafiqul Islam Hossain were present during the inspection.

After the inspection, the delegation exchanged views with journalists.

Shafiqul Alam Tuhin said the Youth and Sports Ministry had taken a major initiative to modernise sports facilities in Khulna.

"A Tk 200-crore mega project has been prepared for the overall infrastructural development of Khulna Divisional Stadium and the Women's Sports Complex. It is now awaiting placement before the Pre-ECNEC," he said.

He said development work would begin in full swing immediately after the necessary funds were allocated.

Shantunu Islam said the stadium had long been in need of renovation, describing its development as a longstanding demand of sports-loving people in Khulna.

"Once the Tk 200-crore project is implemented, it will open a new horizon for sports in Khulna," he said, adding that modern facilities would enable the venue to host national and international sporting events again and inspire local players.

Senior BCB officials, representatives of the local administration, political leaders and prominent sports organisers were present during the inspection.

Later, the delegation exchanged views with KDA Chairman Shafiqul Alam Mona. KDA officials, among others, were present at the meeting.

Khulna Divisional Stadium has lost much of its former glory due to the lack of major renovation over the years. Sports lovers hope that the government's new initiative will help restore the stadium's prominence and revive the sporting environment in Khulna.
