DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has undertaken initiatives to bring 50 important intersections under modern and automated traffic signal system by the next few months.

“The city has been witnessing severe traffic congestions, depriving citizens of valuable working hours every day,” DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said this while inaugurated modern automated traffic signal system at Shahbagh intersection today.

He said the traffic system will also be introduced at 22 more intersections under the DSCC very soon, adding, “To ensure a sustainable solution of the traffic congestion, a special pilot project has been undertaken to make vehicular movement in city more systematic and efficient through a fully technology-driven and automated traffic signal system.”

Salam said the modern automated traffic signal system at Shahbagh intersection will help reduce traffic congestion as a pilot operation, and initially, the signal system is being introduced at 20 important intersections in the city.

He said the traffic system has been installed as part of a special initiative of the Prime Minister with the technical support of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). 

Under the DSCC, the system has initially been prepared at eight key intersections: Banglamotor, Hotel InterContinental, Minto Road, Kakrail Circle, Matsya Bhaban, Kadam Foara (Circle), Shiksha Bhaban and Shahbagh intersection, where the system began trial operation today.

He urged all concerned to stop indiscriminate roadside parking and the practice of illegal parking, and refrain from violating traffic laws and signals.

Drivers were also asked to follow traffic warning signs, road markings, zebra crossings and designated lanes while driving. 

“No obstruction or makeshift shops should be allowed at intersections,” the administrator said.

He hoped that successful digitalisation would not only save the working hours of millions of city residents but also reduce professional hardship of traffic police.

Salam said strict enforcement of traffic laws would be ensured to sustain the benefits of modern technology and sought everyone's cooperation in transforming Dhaka into a dynamic and modern smart city.

DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahabubur Rahman Talukder, Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman, BUET Professor Dr Moazzem Hossain, Professor Dr Muhammad Hadiuzzaman, and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Mohammad Anisur Rahman, among others, attended the programme.
