CHATTOGRAM, Aug 11, 2026 (BSS)- Chattogram Port Authority has imposed a fine 
of Taka one crore on the master and shipping agent of the MV CNC Uranus for 
entering Chattogram Port while concealing information regarding a defect in 
the steering gear. 

Additionally, a further Taka 15 lakh has been mandated as 15 percent VAT. So, 
a total of Taka 1.15 crore must be contributed to the port fund. 

The penalty was levied on the local shipping agent APL (Bangladesh) Private 
Limited on Monday (August 10) through an office order signed by Chattogram 
Port Harbor Master Captain Mohammad Zahirul Islam. 

However, the issue was revealed on Tuesday. 

The fine and VAT amount have been instructed to be deposited into the port 
fund via two separate pay orders. As per port sources, when the MV CNC Uranus 
arrived at the port for berthing on August 3, the information sheet provided 
to the pilots in accordance with the ISM code did not disclose the defect.

Later, just prior to entering the port channel, the ship's master notified 
the pilots about the defect and presented the certificate issued by DNV 
Class. 

The port authority's directive indicates that operating the ship while 
withholding information about the defect and the associated restrictions 
poses a significant risk to the safety of the port, the ship, the pilots, 
port facilities, and other vessels. 

For this reason, a fine has been levied against both the ship's master and 
the shipping agent. 

Earlier on August 5, the MV CNC Uranus lost control due to a malfunction in 
the steering system while navigating the channel of Chattogram port.

At the time, the vessel collided with a navigation buoy and a retaining wall, 
becoming stuck. Later, a rescue operation was conducted overnight, 
successfully freeing the ship.
