DHAKA, Aug 9, 2026 (BSS) - A two-year skills development initiative has been launched to train 500 youths in mobile phone repairing and entrepreneurship in Dhaka and Chattogram.

The programme will provide participants with practical, market-relevant skills in mobile phone repairing and maintenance, enabling them to pursue self-employment and build sustainable livelihoods.

MetLife Foundation, in partnership with Micro Industries Development Assistance and Services (MIDAS), launched the initiative, said a press release here today.

With over 187 million mobile subscribers in Bangladesh and nearly 75 percent of households owning smartphones, the initiative aims to bridge the skills gap and connect young people with opportunities in the mobile repairing sector.

The initiative reflects the MetLife Foundation's commitment to improving economic empowerment and resilience in Bangladesh by supporting skills development aligned with market demand.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MetLife Bangladesh Ala Ahmad said, "Financial security begins with economic opportunity. This partnership with MIDAS represents a meaningful step toward empowering young people with practical and market-relevant skills." 

"By investing in their potential, MetLife Foundation is helping to create pathways for sustainable income, entrepreneurship, and long-term resilience in Bangladesh," he added.

MIDAS Chairman Parveen Mahmud said, "By combining our local expertise with global support, we can equip young people with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in today's economy." 

She added that this programme will not only create employment opportunities but also contribute to building a more inclusive and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in Bangladesh.
