DHAKA, Aug 11, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested a man for allegedly strangling his wife, Swapna Khatun Akter, to death at their rented home in Gulbagh under Shahjahanpur Police Station.

The detainee has been identified as Rubel Mia, 32, arrested from Amtala intersection around 10:30pm on August 9, according to a DMP press release.

According to police, the couple had been married for around 11 years and had two children. Rubel, who is unemployed and allegedly addicted to drugs, had a history of marital disputes with his wife.

On August 8, local elders tried to settle a dispute between the couple after Rubel allegedly assaulted his wife the previous day. The couple quarrelled again that night.

On the morning of August 9, Swapna asked Rubel to leave the house after finding household items broken. Police said Rubel then strangled her and fled.

A relative later found Swapna’s body on the bed and informed police through the national emergency service 999.

Her brother subsequently filed a murder case with Shahjahanpur Police Station.

Police said Rubel confessed to the killing during initial interrogation and later gave a confessional statement before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
