DHAKA, Aug 10, 2026 (BSS) - Kaspersky has advised users to verify website authenticity and URLs, use official streaming services and protect payment information through prepaid cards or dedicated payment services amid a surge in movie-related scams exploiting interest in Christopher Nolan's Odyssey.

The cybersecurity company also advised users to use reliable security solutions with phishing protection, enable multi-factor authentication and regularly monitor their financial and online accounts for suspicious activity.

The advice comes as scammers are creating fake websites offering supposedly free access to Odyssey, often featuring dubbed versions in different languages to attract a wider audience, said a press release today.

It added the sites use fake reviews and ratings to appear legitimate.

When users attempt to watch the film, a fake video player prompts them to register to "continue watching for free". The registration process requests personal information such as email addresses and names and may later ask users to create a password and provide banking details under the guise of activating a "free trial".

This can expose victims to credential theft, particularly when passwords are reused across services, as well as potential financial losses. Similar fraudulent websites are being created in multiple languages while using essentially the same scam tactics.

"We often see scammers seeking to profit from high-profile premieres such as Odyssey, exploiting the excitement and loyalty of fans eagerly awaiting major releases," said Olga Altukhova, Senior Web Content Analyst at Kaspersky.

"Users should be particularly cautious if a film that has only just been released and is still showing in theaters suddenly appears on an unfamiliar or suspicious-looking platform," she said.

She added, "We strongly encourage people to access content only through official services in order to protect their personal data and avoid potential financial losses, and steer clear of what may turn out to be a Trojan horse."

Christopher Nolan's Odyssey has become one of the most internationally anticipated films of 2026, with the excitement surrounding its release being exploited by cybercriminals through the surge in movie-related scams.
