DHAKA, July 30, 2026 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has launched high-resolution climate projection data and an advanced storm surge forecasting model to strengthen the country's capacity to tackle climate change-induced disasters and enhance public safety.

The announcement was made at a national seminar titled "Climate Projection and Storm Surge Modelling for Effective Disaster Risk Reduction in Bangladesh", held today at the Bangladesh Tourism Corporation here.

Defence Secretary Md Ashraf Uddin attended the seminar as the chief guest, while Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bangladesh Chief Representative Junko Takahashi and Wing-3 Chief of the Ministry of Defence Brigadier General Md Saifur Rahman were present as special guests.

BMD Director Md Mominul Islam chaired the event, according to an ISPR press release.

The climate projection data and forecasting tools were developed under the JICA-funded Technical Assistance Project (TAPP) titled "Strengthening the Capacity of Weather and Climate Services."

Under the project, a series of capacity-building training programmes were conducted in July, with scientists from the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Dr Akihiko Murata and Dr Nadao Kohno, providing scientific and technical training to BMD officials.

The new climate projections suggest that Bangladesh's northeastern region may experience increased monsoon rainfall, raising the risk of flash floods due to more frequent extreme rainfall events. Heatwaves may continue with greater intensity even after the onset of the monsoon, while dense fog may increase during winter and the post-monsoon period, the release said.

Officials said the new storm surge forecasting model would provide more accurate advance information on surge height, possible inundation areas and surge patterns, while improving daily forecasts of sea wave heights.

The BMD said the storm surge forecasting model has already become operational, with forecasts being published on its official website. The initiative is aligned with the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) "Early Warnings for All (EW4All)" global programme.

Representatives from the Ministry of Defence, Department of Disaster Management, Armed Forces Division, Bangladesh Water Development Board, University of Dhaka and various government, non-government and international development organisations attended the seminar.

Speaking at the event, the chief guest appreciated JICA's continued support and reiterated the government's commitment to expanding the use of modern technologies to protect people from weather-related hazards.
