Six held with fertilizer being smuggled to Myanmar

DHAKA, July 29, 2026 (BSS) - The Coast Guard arrested six people and seized a large quantity of fertilizer and other goods while they were allegedly being smuggled to Myanmar, officials said on Wednesday.

Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said a special operation was conducted on Tuesday afternoon based on secret information in the sea area near Char Ganguria of Hatiya's Bhasanchar in Noakhali.

During the operation, a Coast Guard team searched a suspicious cargo boat and seized 24,500 kilograms of urea fertilizer, 3,700 kilograms of chickpeas and 6,850 kilograms of split chickpeas (boot dal).

The seized goods were valued at approximately Tk 17.04 lakh, he said.

The boat, seized goods and the six arrested suspects are being processed for further legal action.

Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard would continue such operations to prevent smuggling.
