DHAKA, July 29, 2026 (BSS) - A delegation of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami today urged the Election Commission (EC) to reconsider the proposed law that would disqualify MPO-listed teachers from contesting local government elections.

The demand was made during a meeting between Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin and a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation led by the party's Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar at the EC Building here today.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Golam Parwar said if heads and teachers of educational institutions are not disqualified from contesting parliamentary elections, there is no ground to bar them from contesting local government elections.

Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud and Tahmida Ahmad, and Senior Secretary to the Election Commission Akhtar Ahmed were present at the meeting.

Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Dr. AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Secretary Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, among others, were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the Jamaat delegation submitted a letter containing a total of nine proposals.
