SYLHET, July 26, 2026 (BSS) - Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman today said the trial of martyred journalist Turab's killing was essential to establish justice and ensure a safe working environment for journalists.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Turab's grave at Fatehpur Graveyard in Beanibazar, he said the country was freed from fascism through the sacrifices of people, including journalist Turab and justice must be ensured by bringing his killers to trial.

Dr Shafiqur expressed concern that judicial proceedings in the murder case had yet to begin despite two years having passed since the killing.

"If this murder remains unpunished, it will discourage the emergence of courageous and truth-seeking journalists in the future," he said.

After offering prayers at the grave, he met Turab's family members, conveyed condolences and enquired about their well-being.

Earlier, Dr Shafiqur also visited the graves of several relatives and Jamaat leaders, offering prayers and expressing sympathy to their families.
