DHAKA, July 25, 2026 (BSS) - Assignment editors and chief reporters of different television channels have called for effective initiatives to enhance professional standards of journalists, introduce a registration system, implement a separate wage structure for television journalists, curb unethical practices, and promote technology-driven journalism.
 
They urged Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) to play a more active role in safeguarding journalists' rights and dignity.

They raised the issues at a views-exchange meeting with assignment editors and chief reporters held today at DRU's Shafiqul Kabir auditorium here.
 
DRU President Abu Saleh Akon presided over the meeting with its General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel in moderation.

He said mainstream journalism is facing challenges due to misuse of press identity and the spread of unprofessional reporting, tarnishing the image of genuine journalists. 

He stressed the need for a transparent registration system, financial capability checks before granting media licenses, and ensuring regular salaries for journalists.

DRU General Secretary highlighted DRU's success in securing five-day Eid holidays and ongoing efforts for two weekly holidays.
 
He added that initiatives are underway to ensure Taka 35,000 as the minimum entry-level salary of a journalist.

Speaking at the event, representatives from TV channels and journalists' leaders called for workshops, wage board formation, job security, AI-based training, and stronger welfare measures.
