CHATTOGRAM, July 21, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said building a clean, green, healthy and safe city begins at home, urging residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining cleanliness.

He said a dengue-free, clean and beautiful Chattogram cannot be achieved through government initiatives alone, stressing that active public participation is essential.

The mayor made the remarks while addressing a preparatory meeting on cleanliness, improving workplace environments and preventing mosquito-borne diseases in government offices. 

The meeting, titled "Clean the city-village, build an aesthetic Chattogram," was held at the Chattogram Circuit House conference room.

Calling for a collective effort, Shahadat said meaningful social change must begin with individuals. He urged every family to devote at least one hour every Saturday to cleaning their homes, yards, rooftops and surrounding areas to help create a cleaner and more attractive city.

The mayor also underscored the importance of developing cleanliness habits among children from an early age. 

He said the City Corporation has introduced a School Health Scheme in its schools that includes regular health check-ups, health awareness programmes, proper waste disposal practices and cleanliness assessments.

The mayor said the biggest challenge remains strengthening civic responsibility among citizens, adding that a truly clean city cannot be built unless people stop littering in homes, streets and public transport.

The meeting was attended by the divisional commissioner, deputy commissioner, additional commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), senior officials from government and private organisations, representatives of educational institutions, journalists and members of civil society.
