DHAKA, July 21, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today convicted and sentenced three men to life imprisonment in a case filed over the gang rape of a girl in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka in 2002.
The three convicts are Sujon, Julhash and Mahammad.
Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict in the presence of convicts Sujon and Mahammad and sent them back to jail with conviction warrants. The court also issued an arrest warrant against fugitive convict Julhash.
In addition, the tribunal fined each of the three convicts Taka 100,000, with a further one-year imprisonment in default of payment.
According to the case documents, on the night of March 22, 2002, the three convicts abducted the victim after she stepped out of her house to answer nature's call and took her to a nearby paddy field in the Gorbakanda area of Nawabganj. They then gang raped her and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
The victim filed the case with Nawabganj Police Station and the police on July 18, 2002, filed a charge-sheet against the three. The court later indicted the trio, initiating the trial officially. The court today came up with the judgment after examining total of seven witnesses on different hearing dates.
