July Martyrs' Day observed in Rome

DHAKA, July 19, 2026 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Embassy in Rome observed "July Martyrs' Day 2026" with due solemnity and respect, paying profound tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the July Mass Movement.

Italian citizens, members of the expatriate Bangladeshi community, representatives of various social and cultural organisations, members of the print and electronic media, and embassy officials and employees attended the programme, according to a message received here today. 

The event began with a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising, followed by the reading of messages issued by the President and the Prime Minister marking the day.

A discussion was later held on the significance of July Martyrs' Day, where participants recalled the background of the July Uprising and highlighted the contributions of students, teachers, workers and people from all walks of life in transforming it into a nationwide mass movement.

Addressing the programme, Bangladesh Ambassador to Italy Rokebul Haque paid profound tribute to martyr Abu Sayeed, martyr Wasim Akram, martyr Mugdha and all others who sacrificed their lives during the movement.

He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and the speedy recovery of those injured during the July movement.

The ambassador said the present government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, remains committed to ensuring due honour and recognition for the July martyrs and injured fighters, supporting the welfare of their families, rehabilitating the injured and ensuring proper trials for the killings related to the movement.

Drawing inspiration from the spirit and sacrifices of July, Rokebul called upon all Bangladeshis, irrespective of political affiliation, opinion, religion or ethnicity, to work together in unity towards building a discrimination-free, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh.

The programme concluded with a special munajat seeking eternal peace for the souls of all martyrs of the July Uprising, complete recovery of the injured, and continued peace, prosperity and development of Bangladesh.
