Free surgery programme launched for children with cleft lip, palate

DHAKA, July 18, 2026 (BSS) - A free specialized surgery programme for children born with cleft lip and palate has been launched at the Government Employees Hospital to help restore them to normal life.

Prime Minister's Adviser to the Ministry of Public Administration Ismail Zabiullah inaugurated the programme today.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Ismail Zabiullah said, "Globally, one out of every 500 to 600 newborns is born with a cleft lip or palate. In Bangladesh, around 5,000 children face the congenital condition each year."

"A successful surgery changes not only a face but also a life," he said.

After inaugurating the programme, he said the government has begun work to upgrade every upazila hospital to 101 beds to bring healthcare services to the people's doorsteps.

He also outlined plans to provide special services for government officials and employees at the divisional level and to digitalize all hospital operations.

He also highlighted the government's coordinated initiatives to raise awareness about congenital defects and ensure timely surgery.

Following the inauguration of the free surgery programme, he inaugurated the call centre of the Government Employees Hospital.

Secretaries of the Ministries of Public Administration and Health, along with other senior officials concerned, were present at the inaugural.
