RANGPUR, July 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Teesta was flowing below the danger level (DL) at Dalia point in Nilphamari at 6:00 pm today following ups and downs in its water level and reduction in the rate of onrushing water from upstream during the last 24 hours.

Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said there is no possibility of further deterioration of the situation as intensity of monsoon rains notably lessened in the adjoining upstream northeastern Indian states during the period.

If the monsoon rainfall rate further decreases in the upstream and downstream parts of the Brahmaputra basin within the next 24 hours, the flood situation may continue to improve.

“The Teesta was flowing below the DL by 10cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari and 1cm at Kawnia point in Rangpur respectively at 6pm today,” Executive Engineer of the BWDB's Teesta Barrage Division Amitav Chowdhury told BSS at 7:15 pm.

Earlier, some floodplains, low-lying and char areas of several upazilas in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur districts temporarily went under water as the Teesta was flowing above DL yesterday.

BWDB’s Rangpur Circle Superintending Engineer Md Ahsan Habib told BSS this evening that water levels of major rivers marked rise and fall following reduction in monsoon rains both in the upstream and downstream during the last 24 hours.

There is no possibility of any major flooding in the Brahmaputra basin in the coming days.
“We are closely monitoring the situation round the clock,” Engineer Md Ahsan Habib said.

Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB in a bulletin today said that moderate to moderately heavy rainfall is forecast over the country as well as in the upstream Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal during the next 72 hours.

During the last 24 hours, water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar in the Rangpur division of the northern region have increased which may remain stable during the next one day and may decrease on the second and third days.

As a result, during the next 24 hours, the flood situation in the low-lying areas adjacent to the Teesta in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts may improve.

On the other hand, the Teesta at Kawnia point in Rangpur may temporarily flow above the L, causing short-duration flood conditions at places in the adjacent low-lying areas, and the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar in Gaibandha and Kurigram may flow at the Warning Level, and the adjacent low-lying areas may be temporarily inundated.

During the last 24 hours till 3:00 pm, 77mm rainfall was recorded at Baghmara point in Meghalaya and 39mm at Dhubri point in Assam of India while no major rainfalls were recorded downstream in the Brahmaputra basin.

The Dudhkumar was flowing below danger level (DL) by 30cm at Pateshwari, Dharla by 107cm below DL at Kurigram and Brahmaputra was flowing below its DL by 116cm at Noonkhawa, 109cm at Hatia and 98cm at Chilmari points respectively at 3 :00pm today.

The Jamuna was flowing below DL by only 136cm at Fulchhari, 174cm at Shaghata, 132cm at Bahadurabad, 147cm at Sariakandi, 190cm at Kazipur and 151cm at Sirajganj points at 3 pm today.

Meanwhile, the district and upazila administrations, BWDB authorities, local monitoring committees and public representatives are closely observing the developing situation in the flood-prone areas.
