DHAKA, July 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Election Commission (EC) has amended the guidelines on the establishment and management of polling centres for local
government elections, increasing the number of voters allocated to each polling booth.
The information was disclosed today in a gazette notification signed by Election Commission Senior Assistant Secretary (Election Support-3) Md. Rashid Mia.
According to the amended Guidelines on the Establishment and Management of Polling Centres for Local Government Elections-2025, one polling centre will, on average, be established for every 2,000 voters.
In addition, one polling booth will generally be designated for every 600 male voters and every 500 female voters.
The guidelines further states that if a by-election is held for a single post, one polling booth will generally be designated for every 600 male voters and every 500 female voters and if necessary, more than one secret booth may be installed in each polling booth.
The amended guidelines also stipulates that at least one polling centre must be established within the boundary of each general ward.
However, if required in view of practical considerations, more than one polling centre may be established.
Previously, the guidelines provided for one polling booth for every 400 male voters and 300 to 350 female voters in general elections and one polling booth for every 500 male voters and 400 female voters in by-elections.
The amended guidelines have increased these voter thresholds.
