DHAKA, July 6, 2026 (BSS) -Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested five members of an alleged organized gang accused of luring victims into "honey trap" schemes, recording compromising videos and extorting money through blackmail.
Speaking at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road, Md. Tariqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP's DB Cyber & Special Crime (South) Division, said the suspects targeted a loan officer of a private financial institution by using a woman posing as a loan applicant.
The victim was allegedly lured to a flat in Khilgaon, assaulted, filmed in a compromising situation and later forced to hand over cash, bank cards and other valuables.
According to Islam, the gang extorted Tk 110,000 from the victim through mobile financial services while demanding an additional Tk 300,000, threatening to release the video on social media.
The victim filed a case with Khilgaon Police Station on June 22.
The five suspects were arrested during coordinated raids in Sabujbagh, Badda and Khilgaon between the evening of July 3 and the morning of July 4.
Police recovered nine mobile phones, one walkie-talkie and Tk 4,000 in cash during the operation.
Tariqul Islam said investigators have found evidence on seized digital devices suggesting the group used the same modus operandi to target multiple victims.
He added that efforts are underway to identify additional victims and other members of the criminal network.
The arrested suspects are currently on police remand, and the investigation is continuing.
