DHAKA, July 4, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today observed a "Cleaning Day" programme across its 10 administrative zones simultaneous under the slogan, "Keep Our Premises Clean, Build a Cleaner City."

The initiative held aimed to encourage the direct participation of citizens in maintaining urban cleanliness.

DSCC Administrator Md. Abdus Salam attended the programme of Zones 1 and 2 in the city's Shantinagar area as the chief guest.

In support of the weekly cleanliness drive announced by the Prime Minister, the City Corporation has been observing the first Saturday of every month as 'Cleanliness Day' in the areas under its jurisdiction.

As part of the programme, government and private institutions, educational establishments, markets, shopping complexes and residents were encouraged to keep their premises and surrounding areas clean. Citizens were also urged to dispose of waste at designated locations instead of littering haphazardly and to remain vigilant against spread of dengue.

The day-long campaign included cleanliness drives in different areas, awareness rallies, leaflet distribution and calls for stronger community participation to ensure sustainable waste management.

Speaking at the programme, Abdus Salam said building a clean and dengue-free city is not possible through the efforts of the city corporation alone and it required active cooperation from the residents.

"If everyone keeps their own premises clean and prevents water from accumulating in places where Aedes mosquitoes can breed, controlling dengue during this season will become much easier," he said.

He added that proper waste disposal would not only keep the city clean but also help to keep the canals and drains functional, thereby reducing water-logging.

The DSCC administrator also stressed that behavioural change among the citizens is crucial to maintaining urban cleanliness. He said the city corporation would further strengthen public awareness campaigns alongside its regular cleaning operations so that cleanliness becomes a daily habit for the residents.

The programme was attended by DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Jahirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, Secretary Md. Zainul Abedin, regional executive officers and other officials of the corporation.

Local public representatives, members of social and volunteer organisations, students, businesspeople and residents from all walks of life also participated enthusiastically in the campaign.
