DNCC administrator assures support for scheduled desludging programme

DHAKA, July 2, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan today assured full cooperation for the smooth implementation of scheduled desludging activities in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketan areas of the capital.

He made the assurance while chairing a coordination meeting on operational procedures for the programme held at the DNCC administrator's conference room.

The administrator said that proper rules and regulations must be followed in septic tank cleaning to prevent environmental pollution, adding that the initiative should prioritise public interest.

He noted that civic services in Dhaka are not solely managed by city corporations, as agencies such as Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and the power division also operate independently in different sectors.

DNCC, he said, will continue coordination with all relevant agencies to ensure better service delivery.

Representatives from Baridhara, Gulshan, Banani and Niketan societies expressed support for the initiative and assured full cooperation in its implementation.

They said that while some areas have sewer lines under Dhaka WASA, many parts still depend on septic tanks, and in several cases sewage is directly discharged into drains, causing environmental and health hazards, including mosquito breeding and waterlogging.

The administrator instructed strict measures to stop illegal sewage discharge into water bodies, including Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara lakes and stressed enhanced coordination among stakeholders along with public awareness campaigns.

DNCC officials informed the meeting that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Dhaka WASA on October 10, 2023, to ensure safe sewage management.

Under the agreement, five private companies will be evaluated for scheduled desludging operations, with a pilot dry run expected within two months.

DNCC and Dhaka WASA officials, along with society leaders, attended the meeting.
