Civic gathering held to address public sufferings in Dhaka-15

DHAKA, July 1, 2026 (BSS) – State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today visited Dhaka-15 constituency and exchanged views with local residents as part of efforts to resolve the area's ongoing problems.

Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in   parliament   Dr. Shafiqur Rahman  was also present.

The day-long programme began with a views-exchange meeting with residents in West Shewrapara with the presence of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton.

Later, the state minister, accompanied by  others, inspected the Anandabazar Canal, the lane adjacent to Baitur Rahim Jame Mosque in East Monipur, Baishteki Sarkar Bari intersection and different areas of the Ibrahimpur Government Primary School premises.

At each location, he separately exchanged views with local residents and oversaw various problems firsthand.

During the view’s exchanges, local residents highlighted ward-based problems, including water and gas shortages, inadequate drainage, water logging, damaged roads, traffic congestion and drug menace.

Speaking on the occasion, the state minister said, "For the first time in history, the ruling party and the opposition have come together to resolve the problems of an area and with the support of the people we will solve all these problems, Inshallah."

Referring to the positive and collective role of the Leader of the Opposition in the national interest, he said, "The example of cooperation set by Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in the national interest is highly commendable."

He said the problems are being identified in a coordinated manner involving all relevant agencies and permanent solutions will be implemented in phases.

“Local Government Division alone cannot solve all the problems, stressing the need for coordinated initiatives by WASA, Titas, the Power Division and all other relevant agencies,” he said, urging citizens to fulfil their civic responsibilities.

The state minister said all information collected during the visit would be compiled and used to prepare a priority-based action plan. A meeting with the Leader of the Opposition would be held soon to finalise implementable initiatives.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, the Prime Minister had listened and honoured his remarks in the Jatiya Sangsad. 

"The ruling party and the opposition will work together in all development activities in the area with the participation of the people, solve all problems to build a better Dhaka," he said.

Addressing local residents, he said, "We are always beside you as guards of your lives and property. Our main objective is not to remain confined to formalities but to find practical and effective solutions to eliminate people's sufferings."

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is not the leader of any specific constituency but of all 300 constituencies of the country. 

DNCC Administrator Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton said all necessary information had been collected to resolve the longstanding problems and issues under the DNCC jurisdiction.

He said visible changes would be achieved gradually through action rather than words and the DNCC is continuing its regular activities, including household waste removal, dengue mosquito control, canal recovery and renovation, drainage and road repairs, cleanliness drives and tree plantation campaigns. 

He urged all to remain vigilant in preventing dengue.

Speakers and local residents at the meeting expressed over the coordination between the ruling and opposition party for the sake of the people and social welfare. 

They expressed hope that the joint effort would bring a permanent and effective solution to the long-standing accumulated problems of Dhaka-15 constituency.

Dhaka WASA Managing Director Md. Aminul Islam, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Health Officer Brig. Gen. Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Brig. Gen. Syed Rakibul Hasan, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir, General Manager (Transport) Mohammad Shawkat Osman, Executive Magistrate Marufa Begum Neli and representatives of the Local Government Engineering Department and other departments were present during the inspection.
