Objective journalism facing crisis in country: BFUJ Secretary General

BFUJ Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury spoke at a seminar held at the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust.

DHAKA, June 29, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury today said objective journalism is facing a crisis in the country and called for concerted efforts by all concerned to overcome the situation.

Emphasising the importance of objective journalism, he said: "Journalism must be entirely truthful, with no room for falsehood or half-truths, and there is no scope for compromise."

Kader Gani made the remarks at a seminar held at the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust on Circuit House Road in the capital this afternoon.

The seminar, titled "Media Freedom, Preventing Aggression and an Accountable Framework", was organised by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust.

Referring to unethical journalism, Kader Gani said, "So-called 'bag editors' have now become dangerous, alleging that they print newspapers, carry them under their arms and visit the Secretariat and various offices to engage in lobbying for personal gains."

People are fed up with such "bag editors" and yellow journalism, he noted.

In this context, he further said writing whatever one wishes is not journalism, yet it is happening frequently. Therefore, accountability is necessary. "Write the truth, and the state will provide you security," he added.

He said, "Journalists must have conscience. Today, we have surrendered ourselves. People hate subservient journalists."

At this time, he also referred to what he described as the anti-people role of journalists loyal to the then government during the mass uprising.

The BFUJ Secretary General alleged that the Indian media has been continuously spreading false propaganda against Bangladesh.

"Bangladesh is facing aggression from its neighbouring country and mentioned that 140 fake reports were published in the Indian media in 2025," he said, adding that they want to incite riots in the country.

Speaking as the chair of the seminar, Managing Director (MD) of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Mohammad Abdul Basir (Basir Jamal) said a free media is indispensable for building a democratic, accountable and development-oriented state.

He said it is possible to establish a strong, responsible and people-oriented media system in Bangladesh through ensuring an environment free from political and economic pressure, journalists' safety, prevention of misinformation and an accountable framework.

Deputy Director of the Journalists Welfare Trust ABM Rafiqul Islam moderated the seminar, where BFUJ Organising Secretary Erfanul Haque Nahid, among others, also spoke.
