DHAKA, June 23, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku today said the government is working to transform the country's zoos into international standard facilities by combining modern conservation, research, education and entertainment.

He made these remarks while officially releasing two Common Elands and two male Wildebeests, recently imported from South Africa, at the Bangladesh National Zoo to enhance its animal diversity and visitor appeal.

"Various initiatives have been taken to develop the Bangladesh National Zoo into a modern, world-class institution," the State Minister said, adding that the arrival of these new exotic species is a key part of that ongoing modernization blueprint.

Tuku emphasized that the addition of these animals will enrich local wildlife conservation efforts while offering a brand-new educational and visual experience for the public. He strongly urged the zoo authorities to ensure a cleaner, more hygienic and highly visitor-friendly environment to make the national landmark more attractive to both domestic and foreign tourists.

Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md. Shahzaman Khan and National Zoo Director Dr Md Rafiqul Islam Talukdar, among others, were present at the event.

The newly added Common Eland is one of the largest antelope species in Africa, while the Wildebeest is a highly famous and dynamic wild animal native to the African savannah.
